Interview with Andy Weir, author

Skrevet av: Prosjekt Ekspert (daphne, Falke, Julie, Miriam, Martin, Elias)

Was this your dream job when you were young?

I wanted to be a writer!

How did you get this job? Was it hard?

I wrote a book for fun in my spare time. I self-published it to Amazon. It did well, so I was offered a print deal from a publisher. It did really well and so 20th Century Fox made a movie out of it.

What is the best thing about your job?

I'm my own boss

What’s the worst?

It's kind of lonely. When I was a computer programmer I had a whole team I worked with. But now I'm alone most of the day.

What does your job do for society?

Entertainment.

Do you think your job will exist for a long time?

No. I may be part of the last generation of human writers. I think AI will soon overtake humans when it comes to quality and enjoyability of fiction. Not only that, but you'll be able to have an AI on your home computer that knows your specific interests which can write a custom book just for you. Others might not enjoy it at all but you'll think it's amazing.

Are you afraid AI or robots will take over your job?

I think it will happen. I'm not afraid of it. I'm financially set.

Can AI or robots ever do your job as well as a human could?

Yes I think they could.

Why did you choose this job?

I like telling stories.

How do you get ideas for books?

Usually I think of something interesting in science. Then write a story around it.

How do you figure out all of the science stuff?

Google. Just tons of research.

How does a day of work look for you?

I answer emails in the morning. I try to write 1000 words a day after that.

How long does it take to write a book?

About a year.

What do you think of the martian movie?

It was amazing! I couldn't have asked for better.

Which one of your books was the most fun to write?

Project Hail Mary. It flowed really well.
